Borobudur Temple - Magelang, Central Java Indonesia
Where : Magelang, Central Java Indonesia Place : Borobudur Temple When : Mid Aug 2008 I didn't believe that one day i will step my feet on Borobudur Temple, and here i was walking up the stairs with the rest of the visitors on a weekend. It was a weekend when i was there, and Oh My! there were so many people that you could hardly take a pic of a location without having someone in your snapshot. Take a look at how many visitors that day... Isn't that alot???! Walking towards the temple, turn to ur right and you can see mountain. But the most fasinating about that mountain is that u can see an image of a person lying down. Spot the eye and the nose? Here's a close up of it. I'm not a buddhist and so I do not really understand what my tour guide was telling me about the pilgrimage performing the rites here. But anyway, Im writing to what is my understanding of Borobudur from her explanation. The proper way of entering Borobudur Temple is from the East, and walking clockwise as you reach each level of the temple. There are nine levels. The first six terraces are filled with richly decorated relief panels in which the sculptors have carved a textbook of Buddhist doctrines. The upper platform features seventy-two small stupas surrounding one large central stupa. Each containing a statue of the Buddha (these statues are usually headless; relic hunters stole many of the heads, others are in museums). Crowning the entire structure is a great central stupa. Representing Nirvana, it is empty. See some of the headless statues above? Labels: historical, indonesia, indonesia culture, overseas
