Lebaran "Open-House"

The beginning of Syawal (refers to one of the months in the muslim calender) marks the ends of Ramadhan (Ramadhan is the month where the muslims would fast from the break of the dawn till the sunset). The first day of Syawal is called Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Lebaran Eid Mubarak.

This year Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on Oct 1st.

Hari Raya lasted for a month. Muslims are seen doing house visiting within family members, relatives and friends. But as a multi racial community in Spore, muslims family would invite friends and colleagues from other races to their homes for small gathering.

Not only cakes and delicacies were served, but the host would usually prepare few dishes for their guests especially when the family hold "Lebaran Open-House". I had my Lebaran Open-House yesterday. Why issit called "Open-House"? Bcos the house would be open for all invited and uninvited guests, and lotsa dishes would be served during the occassion.

List of food that my siblings and I prepared were :

Main dishes

  • Ayam masak merah (Chicken cooked in sambal)
  • Beef rendang
  • Nasi Rampai (Spiced rice)
  • Nasi Empit (Rice cake)
  • Fried Bee Hoon
  • Satay sauce

Side dishes :

  • Pincho (cold dish of chopped pineapples, red chilli, cucumber, onions)
  • Salad with boiled eggs topped with home made chilli
  • Popiah sardine and vege
  • Dadih (Malay jelly) - grape and corn flavors
  • Fruits
  • Cakes and such
My Lebaran Open-House started from 9am and ends at 10pm, and BOY! im so so exhausted by 8pm!

Cooking started as early as 7am the day before, started with marketing...buying all the ingredients for the dishes. And I didnt sleep for more than 24hrs. Tried to get to sleep but I just couldn't. Probably because this is my first time doing cooking on my own for a big group and getting to know that i will be seeing all my good old friends from my previous workplace and my poly friend.

Besides, i get to mingle and get to know my bros and sister's friend. I really and truly enjoyed the whole event of preparing, cooking and talking to all my guests.

To all my guests...my own friends, my bro and sister's friends...THANK YOU SO MUCH for visiting. Don't know when we'll see each other again...
